EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY
Objectivity is undeniably one of journalism's most important characteristics. Individual journalists, however, find it difficult to accept journalism's values owing to the many issues they experience in their career due to the nature of the business ( Goldie,2003).
As a result, the issue of objectivity emerges. As previously mentioned, objectivity can often interpreted differently by various individuals. When reporting on particular events, a reporter may be prejudiced in one of two ways. (a) When the reporter's beat knowledge is unbalanced, and when the account of facts is corrupted through transmission from one person to another. (b) When the facts gathered lack clarity due to misinformation from the source of information, the reporter and editor in this case are always at risk of getting the entire thing incorrect (Hadden, 1997). Furthermore, ambiguous facts might affect a journalist's neutrality if he is unable to locate a source to assist him in verifying them.
In a peace process, the media may be both a protagonist and an enemy. Media has the potential to promote human security, yet there is evidence that it may also strengthen incentives for conflict (Okon,2020). It may be a tool for promoting peace and conflict resolution by disseminating messages and tactics that lead to peaceful agreements and tolerant behavior in a specific culture. The media may also be used as a weapon of war, spreading skewed information and manipulating communities or parties in conflict with dividing beliefs and detrimental behaviors. As a result, the media has grown omnipresent and powerful in shaping public perceptions of conflict. Governments, military, corporate pressure, economic interests, and other factors often limit media companies, particularly when reporting wars. The media, on the other hand, is sometimes more than happy to go along with self-censorship. The use of the media in the battle against crime, as well as lobbying for economic and social causes, is legendary.
Many young Nigerians shared graphic accounts of their contacts with the squad on social media, with some describing incidents of abuse, kidnapping, extortion, extrajudicial executions, and false incarceration. These accounts back up an Amnesty International (AI) study from 2020 that outlines SARS' pattern of human rights abuses. SARS is notorious for operating in civilian clothing and carrying assault weapons. The impact of the media on the ENDSARS demonstration, on the other hand, cannot be overstated, since the protest began on social media platforms before being taken to the streets. The media also had a role in mobilizing and organizing the demonstration. As a result, it is necessary to investigate the role of impartiality in media coverage of the EndSars protest.
